The world is reopening.
We’re excited to help you re-emerge from the past few months.
We believe that environmental sustainability is key to the future of preserving and protecting conservation areas in South Africa. It is a combination of our exclusive-use private reserve, together with low impact responsible hunting, that enables us to pursue our vision.
Staying in Touch - Spring 2020
2020, what a year it has been. For professional hunters and Outfitters in South Africa it will go on record as being the toughest year in the history of our business. March 25 shut our businesses down for the next 12 months. Or at least that is what it looks like it will be. Faced with the prospect of no income from all the previous year’s hard work and marketing expenses w, and having just been relieved from the worst drought in living history was going to be a back breaker for most.
Southern Cross was no different. We needed to make massive adjustments immediately and re arrange our lives to be able to make it through to the next season. Expenses for Outfitters with their own land do not stop. We cannot just park the Land Cruiser and hunker down. Our properties continue to devour funds that now could not be replaced. Facing total destruction for the first time in our 180 year ranching life was very real.
We are now 5 months away from our first booked hunt for 2021 and through the worst of the so called pandemic, and will be bursting out the blocks when that day comes. Our 2021 season is pretty full already and we are hoping to have a bumper year. The rains came in January and for the first time in 7 years we have had some spring rain last week so our game has had the best start they have had in a very long time.
Our Buffalo herd continues to grow and the quality genes that we originally invested in are now showing in the bulls that are free roaming Southern Cross’s mountainous bush and deep valley thickets. The condition of the game is like I have never seen before and should produce some fine trophies in the years to come.
I would like to offer an opportunity to any of our old clients to get in touch with us as we will be offering some good opportunities at our home ranch for the trophies that you still need for your collection or animals that you may want to improve on. We also have a few spaces left in the concession that we use in Mozambique for some incredible big game as well as some of the biggest Crocodiles available in Africa. Tanzania also remains open for some of the best free range hunting available anywhere in the world. I encourage you to please have a good look at our web page, www.southerncrosshunting.net and get in touch for any hunting or personal tours that you have dreamed of in the past and let us help you make them a reality.
We have also decided to put the lodge into the market for exclusive use holidays during the off season for both International as well as local guests. If you are an international traveler wishing to have some very private down time at very affordable rates this is the place for you.
The South African wildlife and tourism industry has taken an incredible hit during this covid time and was the first to be totally locked down and will be the last to be able to get back to normal business again and it will need all the support that it can get so I urge all who see this newsletter to please consider supporting the industry if you can.
We look forward to a good recovery year in 2021 and as usual will go above and beyond to make your time with us a memory that will last a life time.

South African Hunt Experience
Just to reflect on our hunt on GannaHoek and Southern Cross Safari’s with my family!
Wow, what an extraordinary, unique and absolute memorable experience! The staff’s eagerness, skill and personal attention to detail complimented this special and professional hunt! As an accomplished trophy and meat hunter, this reserve, terrain and staff presented something new that I have not experienced in my 29 years of serious hunting! We bagged some stunning trophies and completed in 3 days the so-called Reedbuck Slam in the beautiful mountain setting where GannaHoek is located. A first time hunt for my daughter who managed to shoot her first Black Wildebeest, supported and guided by the owner and PH Chris Cawood himself!
We cannot thank you all for making this a special weekend not to be forgotten with endless stories to share!

PRIVATE RESERVE STAY
Book into the GannaHoek Private Nature Reserve for the nostalgic Karoo safari experience. Located close to Cradock, the historical settler homestead, set in a park-like garden with a private swimming pool, has been converted into an elegant manor lodge. The homestead is steeped in atmosphere, with old paintings on the walls, well oiled antiques from a lifestyle of the past, creaky polished wooden floor and mounted game trophies on the walls.
